2024 - March April  - Gallery Exhibition

2024 is a milestone year, marking 60 years of my life and a 40-year career.

This is not a ‘retrospective’ as such, but a substantial print collection of my favourite photographs taken over the last decade or so, mostly featuring Eryri and Ynys Môn where I've lived most of my life, but also coastal images from my Cornish homeland, and a sprinkling of fascinating observations from other parts of the world.

It's hard to summarise 40 years of image-making in one exhibition, but I hope you enjoy the rich selection I've chosen.

2019 -  August  - Gallery Exhibition

"Family Visions" - Joint art exhibition - Frodsham Arts Centre, Cheshire

Glyn was delighted to hear that three of his images were selected as winning entries amongst the final 50 that would comprise the exhibition & SUN 28 Awards book. The solo judge this year was Louise Clements, Artistic Director of QUAD, a centre for contemporary art and film, as well as being the Co-Founder and Artistic Director/Curator of FORMAT International Photography Festival in Derby since 2004.

My art dealers Art Salon represent my nudes project. They are once again using AAF Battersea to showcase my work alongside their other established painters and sculptors. I am the only photographer they represent, See them and a selection of my nudes prints at Stand C5

Two of my images selected for this joint exhibition of Anglesey artists. including two prints by my talented partner Jan Williams. 

For the first time in my career, I have an art collector/dealer representing my work . The Art Salon are using AAF Battersea to showcase my work alongside their other established painters and sculptors and I am the first photographer they have chosen to represent, a big honour for me. See them and a selection of my nudes prints at Stand J1.

Shot Up North  - "SUN AWARDS #27" - Joint photo exhibition - The Gallery Munro House, Leeds

The SUN Awards showcase and reward the best in professional photography. Now in its 27th year, SUN returns to 'The Gallery at Munro House', with it’s annual competition exhibition..

Glyn entered 6 images into this year's SUN Awards after a 13 year lay-off. He was therefore especially delighted to hear that 4 of his images were selected as winning entries (the highest number from one artist) amongst the final 50 that would comprise the exhibition & SUN 27 Awards book. The solo judge this year was eminent portrait photographer, Brian Griffin. The 50 winning entries were printed & foam-core mounted by CC Imaging of Leeds and are on show from 3 - 7th November 2015.

"Tabernacle Art Competition" - Joint art exhibition - Museum of Modern Art, Wales

I'm delighted to announce that my image, "First Flight" has been selected for the Tabernacle Art Competition exhibition at MOMA Cymru / Wales in Machynlleth (www.momawales.org.uk). I'm particularly pleased as the gallery is predominantly associated with contemporary painters, drawers and sculptors so it's nice to see photography embraced within the 'art' remit.

The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper” is the title of the competition taken from ‘A Shadow Passes’ by Eden Phillpotts, 1918. I read the poem carefully and felt my image absolutely fitted the brief.

I have found that the only real way to feel utterly connected to landscape is to be naked, sensuously engaged with it, to be able to feel the wind and rain on your skin; to sense the changing warmth of the sun, and cool of the shade; to feel the earth between your toes and the roughness of the rock. In all, to become acutely aware of our organic nature, our vulnerability in wild places, we need to ‘see’ the truth of our surroundings. We need stripping of all forms of protection in order to heighten our awareness.

“First Flight” is a visual analogy of the sentence in “A Shadow Passes” - ‘But one needs a lens to judge of their beauty: it lies hidden from the power of our eyes’ - it’s only when we ‘feel’ the landscape that we ‘see’ the hidden and not so hidden elements within it.

In this image, a volunteer who is a young single mother, climbs a mountain for the first time and for the first time removes her clothes in public to be photographed – two comfort zones have been dramatically crossed, yet her elation was ecstatic, she had seen and realized something about herself that she never knew existed, she feels liberated and freed and has since taken her young daughter back to the summit to show her what ‘Mummy’ experienced. I feel this image is so apt in relation to Phillpotts’ poem.

9th August - 21st September 2014 - Gallery Exhibition

"Landscape Figures" - Print exhibition - Oriel Ynys Môn Gallery, Wales

A major new photographic exhibition at Oriel Ynys Môn.  This was Glyn Davies’ second exhibition at Oriel Ynys Môn and was quite a departure from his first show, as for the first time we saw Glyn introducing the naked form into his magnificent landscapes.

For Glyn the landscape has always been more important than photography itself, however, for just over 3 years now, he has been spending much of his time on a new project which deals with the subject of fragility and vulnerability of the human form in wild landscapes, and it was in his late twenties that he discovered the freedom and liberation of sunbathing on naturist beaches that had a major influence on his attitudes to nudity and his approach to this new project.

“I found myself fascinated by the link between the stripped-bare naked form and the naturalness of the wind-formed sand – everything seemed ‘right’, understandable and connected.  I started to place myself in many other landscapes whilst out and about shooting images for my gallery, and I realised that the simple exploration of nude figures within landscape was becoming a self-portrait project, but there was a growing intrigue to see if others would relate to my ideas”.

In most cases Glyn has hidden the models faces, as he did not want his images to become ‘portraits’ of actual people, but simply studies of figures in situ.  “ Although the nude is vital to the project and integral within the images, the images are not just ‘nudes’ – they are landscapes and stories. In a way they are just beautiful, dreamlike visual questions”.

At the same time one of Glyn’s new images ‘The Commandment’ was chosen as the winner of a  contemporary fine-art photo contest run by the Netherlands based ‘Unlimited Grain Gallery’, this image will be included in a hard backed art book.   Glyn also intends to produce another book based on his Landscape Figures which will be added to his series of four hugely popular landscape books

2014 April 12th – 27th - Gallery Exhibition

Anglesey Open Studios - Print exhibition - Oriel Glyn Davies Gallery

 

"Landscape Figures" (nudes in landscape), is Glyn’s major exhibition at the Oriel Ynys Môn this Summer. 

For this year's Anglesey Open Studios, Glyn will display some ‘tasters’ from “Landscape Figures” alongside his latest landscape prints. N.B. Images feature full-frontal nudity.

Glyn will be on hand to discuss his work. Prints and books as always, are available for sale.

2013 From March 23rd - Gallery Exhibition

"Annual Exhibition, 2013" - at the Oriel Glyn Davies Gallery

This is my annual exhibition and is timed to coincide with the start of the Anglesey Open Studio Fortnight. I only hold one major launch of new work each year now, so this is it. I will release occasional new Edition prints throughout the year but this is the event to see all the new images in one go.

As normal, the images deal with North Wales landscapes from Snowdonia, Anglesey and the Llyn peninsula. The bias this year is most definitely the mountains, a subject increasingly close to my heart, and a shift away from seascapes.

2012 Oct 24th - Nov 18th - Gallery Exhibition

"Welsh Light" - at Coleg Harlech's new Bistro Gallery, Harlech

This was just over a two week exhibition to mark the opening of the new Bistro & Gallery at Coleg Harlech, surprisingly enough, in Harlech overlooking the beautiful Cardigan Bay. It's not a huge venue but the corridors were well spot-lit for ten of my Limited Editions, and the bright, airy, bistro area swallowed a further five of my huge A1 prints. Each of the 15 images appears in my latest 156 image book, "Welsh Light" so this show went by the same name, as a sample of the range of images of Snowdonia, Anglesey and the Llyn peninsula.

The show was opened by two friends I've know for years, Albert Owen MP and sculptor and centre director, Trefor Fôn Owen. It was also a pleasure to meet Lord Dafydd Ellis Thomas who of course opened my Nant Gwrtheyrn exhibition at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff in 2009. All three purchased signed copies of  Welsh Light on the night.

The AOP are delighted to be showcasing the work of AOP Member Glyn Davies, who previously exhibited in our gallery in 2011. This time Glyn brings us a selection of stunning images from his fourth photography book, Welsh Light, which will be published this August.  The new book will contain 120 full plate images in this 264 page publication.  There is a 6000 word introduction describing the artist's response to his subject and his rationale for photography. The foreword has been written by the Guardian picture editor, Roger Tooth.

"Welcome to my fourth and largest volume of photographs so far, all created during my wanderings across the intriguingly beautiful and varied rural regions of Anglesey, Snowdonia and the Llyn. As with previous volumes, I should start by saying that this is not a book ‘about’ Wales, but instead a personal collection of atmospheric images stimulated by the light, weather and culturally influenced landscape of this captivating, spectacular area.

You will undoubtedly recognise many of the places pictured in this book, but when you study the body of work ‘as a whole’, you will hopefully notice something else, something unfamiliar - sometimes disturbing, sometimes melancholy, occasionally uplifting – something that has far more to do with a spiritual connection to this ancient earth, infinite skies and that fragile thing called ‘life’. Welsh Light is more than just an interpretation of a magical landscape, it’s a momentary insight into my search for the ‘bigger picture’

"REFRESH - Ffresni" - Oriel Glyn Davies Gallery, Menai Bridge

Over the last year Glyn has been increasingly shooting moody mountain imagery of Snowdonia, alongside his ethereal seascapes of Anglesey and the Llyn. This NEW exhibition comprises large, beautifully crafted Limited Edition archival prints of these areas. Open edition prints are also available at smaller sizes.

2012   7th Jan - 4th Feb  - Collaborative Exhibition

"Before and After" Rhyl Library Arts Centre - Church Street, Rhyl  01745 882523

A joint exhibition by collaborative artists, Glyn Davies and Wanda Zyborska, dealing with the issues surrounding scarification after life-threatening breast cancer, and what it means to the artist Wanda,  as a woman, who is additionally reflecting on the process of aging anyway. In her naked state, surrounded by her large organic looking rubber sculptures, her figure is exposed to all. Here, we are able to study without challenge the effects of scarring, but at the same time can reflect on the natural beauty that is the both the female form and Wanda's body.  By working with a male artist, Wanda wanted to see how the effects of scarring might affect the male gaze and appreciation of the female figure. Glyn is producing six A0 sized prints as his art work for this intriguing collaboration but a series of Wanda's avant garde sculptures will also be seen at this show.

The Private View was on Tuesday 10th January at 7.00 pm.

There was a performance at the opening by the artist Wanda.

2011   June 7th - June 10th -  Print Exhibition

"Wales Uploaded" - Association of Photographers Gallery, LONDON

This show was the prestigious second venue for the long awaited exhibition of Glyn's latest images. It was over 25 years since Glyn had held a show in London so this was a fantastic opportunity to bring his Welsh images to a London audience. An exhibition was well overdue, as it was almost a year from his last exhibition of new work, instead of the anticipated 3-4 times a year. The upside to the year long wait is that there was some very powerful new work to seen in this show. There was a talk for photographers on Wednesday 8th June at the AOP Gallery, at 3.00 pm.

2011   March 26th - April 9th Print Exhibition

"Wales Uploaded" - Oriel Glyn Davies Gallery, Menai Bridge

This show is a long awaited exhibition of Glyn's latest images. In fact it is almost a year overdue as normally he releases new work 3-4 times each year. However, with the general state of the economy last year, the almost complete lack of buying public in the first half year, it was simply not feasible. However the second half of 2010 was much more buoyant and customers regained spending confidence. The upside to the wait is that there is some phenomenally powerful new work to be printed and shown in this next release.

2010  Collaborative Print / Sculpture Exhibition

"The Public and the Private" - Collaborative Exhibition: Basement Gallery - Vienna

2009 - Solo Print Exhibition & Book Launch

 "Nant Gwrtheyrn: The Enchantment - Y Swyngyfaredd" - Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery - Bangor

The exhibition travels to Bangor and was opened by Former Police Chief of North Wales, Sir Richard Brunstrom, who learned Welsh at Nant Gwrtheyrn himself. Once again the main speaker was followed by Dr Carl Clowes and then Glyn who gave an opening talk about the project and his work.

2009 - Solo Print Exhibition & Book Launch   

"Nant Gwrtheyrn: The Enchantment - Y Swyngyfaredd" - Wales Millennium Centre - Cardiff

On Saturday 4th April 2009 at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, Glyn launched his third fine-art photography book, together with a sizeable exhibition of large format prints of many of the images featured.

The exhibition was opened by Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas - Presiding Officer of the National Assembly of Wales, followed by Dr Carl Clowes - Founder & President of Nant Gwrtheyrn Welsh Language Centre. Glyn also gave an opening talk about the project and his work.

2008 - Joint Art Exhibition

"Davies, Davies, Davies and Davies" - (TWO pairs of brothers, from TWO generations) Ucheldre Centre - Holyhead

Gareth, Dyfed, Glyn and Simon Davies

This joint exhibition features the work of four artists from the same Welsh family. Each works in a different medium - including sculpture, painting, drawing and photography - to express ideas, emotions and observations. For two of the artists, this is their first exhibition in many years, but the work they have been producing in their own time is both powerful and thought-provoking.

2008 - Solo Print Exhibition

"Nant Gwrtheyrn: The Enchantment - Y Swyngyfaredd" - Café Meinir - Nant Gwrtheyrn

These images are from a new art project I started back in February this year, about this amazing, beautiful, surreal and resurrected village of Nant Gwrtheyrn. An original discussion with founder of the Nant Gwrtheyrn trust, Dr Carl Clowes resulted in an open-ended, completely personal brief which has now been extended throughout 2008. A much larger exhibition to launch a new 50-60 image art book about Y Nant, is planned for March 2009. The book will be on sale at Y Nant and also here online.

"Recent Works" Oriel Glyn Davies Gallery

The first release of Glyn's new work in 2008 took place on Saturday 15th March at his Gallery in Menai Bridge. These images were all limited editions and were all new images produced since the release of the Anglesey Landscapes book in November 2007. There are only around three or four releases of latest work each year now.

"Isles Apart" Ucheldre Centre Gallery - Holyhead

Isles Apart is a collection of personal, visual fascinations. The photographs were taken on just a few of the islands I’ve visited, from the Azores and the Canaries, to Malta and Greece, but also including our own beautiful Ynys Môn. I have always been fascinated by islands with their finite perimeters of coastline, and being surrounded by sea. The distances between these geographical wonders have highlighted huge variations of topography and human influence.  This is not a tourist guide to these islands, more of an artist’s awareness of the visual similarities between isles thousands of miles apart!

2006 - Solo Print Exhibition

"Latest Works" - Pensychnant Nature Conservation Centre - Conwy

A new exhibition of work has gone up in this fantastically located Gothic house (actually 16th Century to Victorian) at the top of the Sychnant Pass. It is the centre of the Pensychnant Nature Conservation Centre which "works with local naturalists to record and safeguard the wildlife and natural beauty of Wales". The Pensychnant Foundation is a registered charity and 30% of all picture sales go to the charity. Seven of Glyn's large format limited editions have been erected along with 10 of his smaller A3 images including some previously unseen works.

An exhibition of maritime drawings and photographs by two professional Welsh artists. Gareth and Glyn Davies, father and son, teamed up to create a collection of work based around the boats, ships, seascapes and harbours of the West coast of Britain, especially Wales, Cornwall and Lancashire

"Celtic Connections" - Oriel Ynys Môn - Anglesey

This solo photographic exhibition - the first professional photographer’s show to be held in the Oriel Ynys Môn Gallery on Anglesey,  juxtaposes dramatic images of Penwith in Cornwall with gentler images of Anglesey. The pictures show that these two ancient Celtic lands have as many similarities as differences, and that there are still places and times to experience a sense of wilderness or solitude and equally, moments to simply stand in awe
