We stuck it in a high gear and made for the brightening sky, sunshine gradually warming the interior of the van through the salt-smeared windscreen.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn arrival, the wind was strong, and the sand was lifting and blowing across the beach. I headed for the shoreline where the breeze tried to do the same with sheet water. The sand was soaking, and it reflected the scudding painted clouds on its surface. This was another of my open-air theatre moments where scenes were changing by the second. So, on this particular evening, the stormy weather and waves crashing over the nearby rocks, almost obscuring Puffin Island, really helped to convey the true purpose of this Trinity light. These are the conditions when many mariners will be truly grateful that they can see the light and position themselves accordingly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe present Penmon lighthouse at 29m tall was erected between 1835 and 1838. It was converted to solar power in 1996 and it's 15,000 candela light can be seen 12 nautical miles away. Here at Llanddwyn where the dunes face the endless breeze from the Irish Sea, spectacular circular shapes can be found carved into the sandy hills. The light is characteristic of this area, with dark clouds over the mountains and occasional brilliant sunshine bouncing off the surface of the sea. First time I’ve worn my new winter wetsuit - (bought in Hayle last year) - as the evening light looked very promising indeed for photography - so I decided to use my proper camera, for the first time in ages. I was in for maybe 45 mins or so, definitely not possible in just my shorts! What a game changer! I had no gloves or wetsuit socks but my body was so warm and even my toes only chilled a little at the end of the session.
